Vitaly - ichange3 columnist with a twist - on yoga

The Shout blog of our vitality app is Vitaly's natural domain. He always has a surprising take on health or vitality. Sometimes it's downright funny, which can be very liberating. When you laugh until your belly hurts, it's like an unconscious work-out for your abs, and for the muscles in your face, legs and back. Sometimes though Vitaly's columns are more philosophical or poetic. Never a dull moment with Vitaly! Here's his take on yoga.

Vitaly's slightly inflexible view on yoga

On World Yoga Day, I learnt that your body doesn’t have to be flexible yet to practise yoga. That won me over, because apart from the fact that I doubt how flexible my mind is, it's certain that nature also gave me very stiff joints.
So I took the principal advice to heart and went searching for an initiation course.. Late last night there happened to be one in my neighbourhood.
The instructor welcomed everybody: "let’s start with the Sun Salutation." As I was staring through the large windows to the lit street lights, everybody started performing the salutation. Saluting a heavenly body which has disappeared from view hours ago, where’s the logic? It’s a bit like acting in front of a blue screen. If I continue with yoga, I actually only want to perform the sun salutation on cloudless days. Quid pro quo.
Afterwards, I luckily managed quite a few things. I felt how my breathing improved. I couldn’t manage to clear my mind, though: the thoughts kept racing.
My motto: disguise your stumbling blocks as perks. Allow those voices inside your head.
That’s why as optimal yoga-music, I’d suggest Voices inside my head by The Police (rather than the misleading Every Breath You Take!). Stewart Copeland’s drum patterns will inspire you to contort yourself, which is an nice extra for a lot of asanas.
