How to keep millennials engaged in the workforce

In modern society of constant change, evolution and instant gratification, changing jobs is one of the most normal things to do when you’re not really happy at your job. Older generations used to start a job and do the same job for the rest of their working days because that was just how it worked. Millennials are much more adept to change, so if they’re not really happy at their job, they will start looking for something else.

This generation has a reputation for looking for different things in a work environment, like really understanding a company’s mission and their role in it.

Millennials can be a real value to your workforce. Their skills and abilities are needed to develop new talent, stay innovative and in touch. Keeping them engaged however isn’t always that simple, but it’s not impossible. Here are some tips that can help you in keeping millennials engaged.
  • Offer a flexible work environment: Millennials prefer a flexible, creative work environment where they can be productive, motivated and make a measurable impact. Flexible working hours and workspaces for example stimulate conversation and innovation.
  • Implement collaborative training instead of traditional formal training: Millennials want to learn in a way that suits them. Utilize interactive websites, gaming, simulations or online training to keep them engaged. This way they can incorporate development into their daily workflow instead of taking them away from their job.
  • Listen to what they have to say. Millennials can bring a different perspective to the table. They want to contribute and really understand how their work has an effect on the organization. Include them in projects and allow them to be part of the process. Make them feel like they are really an important part of the team, just like anyone else.
  • Find a good mentor: Instead of bossing them around, try mentoring them and coach them in a collaborative way, to focus on personal growth and retaining their talent.
  • Treat them as individuals: Millennials are really set on their individuality, which makes a one-size-fits all approach to work certainly not suitable for this generation. Try to customize work to find the best fit for the person inside the company.
